Our story

In 1994, our founder, David Pirrie, started work on a home project to show how suitable database tools could be for more complex financial applications like capital gains tax. It was an experiment at first but eventually David’s project grew in complexity until it developed into a full CGT management solution.

David knew he was on to something with this solution so took the plunge to bring it to market. It wasn’t long before the fledgling FSL had two major banks lined up as its first clients and began crafting the exceptional reputation it still holds to this day.

Now part of the Industrial Thought Ltd group, FSL sits at the heart of a family of companies focused on bringing together financial expertise and tech innovation to support the financial services industry.

Founded in 2013, Industrial Thought is the parent of a group of companies in the fields of investment taxation, financial data, and related consultancy services. It aims to drive transformation by creating a complete suite of data, platform, and marketplace services that enhance capabilities and accelerate innovation.

Managing Director

Michael Edwards is Managing Director of FSL. Michael began his journey with FSL in 2015, working as part of the Business Analysis team before becoming MD in 2022.

Giulia Lawrence

Head of Customer Experience

Giulia Lawrence is Head of Customer Experience at FSL. Prior to joining the team in 2023, Giulia managed a team of Customer Success Managers at research and advisory firm Forrester.

Bruce Prestt-Thomson

Quality Assurance Manager

Bruce Prestt-Thomson is Quality Assurance Manager at FSL. Bruce started his journey with us in 2017, working as a QA consultant under our partner Acutest. He took a permanent position with us in 2021.

David Pirrie is the owner and chair of FSL’s parent company, Industrial Thought. David founded FSL in 1994 and remains active in the business, as well as the wider wealth management industry, to this day.

Mike Baker

Group Managing Director

Mike Baker is the Group Managing Director of FSL’s parent company, Industrial Thought. Mike spent 12 months consulting for Industrial Thought, supporting the leadership team with strategy development and positioning, before becoming MD in 2024.

Joe Hughes

Group Information Officer

Joe Hughes is Head of Technology at FSL's parent company, Industrial Thought. Joe moved to group level in 2023 after sixteen years performing various operational roles within FSL. Prior to this, Joe worked at Brewin Dolphin where he supported the implementation of a portfolio management solution in 29 wealth management offices across the UK.
